On Day 1 of the 5-day Marangu Route trek, you'll begin at Marangu Gate (1,860m) and hike through the lush rainforest to Mandara Hut at 2,700m, covering a distance of 8 km in about 4-5 hours. The trail offers a gentle ascent, allowing you to acclimatize gradually while surrounded by vibrant forest scenery and the sounds of wildlife. The path is well-maintained, making the trek a pleasant introduction to the climb, and upon reaching Mandara Hut, you'll rest and prepare for the next day's adventure. Accommodation: • Meal: Lunch & Dinner • Overnight stay • Horombo Huts
On Day 2 of the 5-day Marangu Route trek, you'll depart from Mandara Hut and trek to Horombo Hut, located at 3,720m. This section covers a distance of 12 km and takes around 6-7 hours to complete. As you ascend, the landscape transitions from lush rainforest to moorland, offering expansive views of the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail becomes steeper, and you'll begin to notice the thinning air, so it's important to maintain a steady pace to aid in acclimatization. Horombo Hut is a larger, more spacious hut where you'll spend the night, resting for the next leg of the journey.
On Day 3 of the 5-day Marangu Route trek, you'll leave Horombo Hut and ascend to Kibo Hut, situated at 4,700m. The trek covers 10 km and takes approximately 5-6 hours. As you climb, the landscape transforms into an alpine desert, with fewer plants and more barren terrain. The trail becomes steeper, and the air grows thinner, making it essential to pace yourself to prevent altitude sickness. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and the summit of Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you'll have a chance to rest and prepare for the challenging summit attempt the following day.
On Day 4 of the 5-day Marangu Route trek, you will begin the challenging summit push. Starting at Kibo Hut (4,700m) around midnight, you'll ascend to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895m. This 6 km climb takes about 6-8 hours, crossing a rugged, snowy, and rocky landscape. The trail is steep and demanding, but reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. After spending a brief time at the peak to celebrate and take in the views, you will begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut. The descent covers 15 km and takes around 5-6 hours, offering a chance to rest and recover before your final descent to the gate the following day.
On Day 5 of the 5-day Marangu Route trek, you'll descend from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate. This 20 km trek takes about 5-6 hours and follows a steady downhill path through the moorland and rainforest. The descent is much easier than the previous days, but it’s still important to maintain a steady pace to avoid strain. As you walk through the lush forest, you'll have a final opportunity to enjoy the rich biodiversity of the area. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you'll complete your climb and receive a certificate of achievement to commemorate reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
